8 Artists X 9 docents
HART Haus, Hong Kong
Ideated by The Buoy, Be-sides was a collaborative, co-articulated performances
between 8 artists, 9 docents, and the HART Haus administrators
in 2020 and 2021.
There were a total of three iterations to this performance, both offline and online,
which were dedicated to the exchange of roles between docents and artists
throughout the showcase exhibition.
During the time, the artists performed the role of docents,
and the (real) docents performed the role of the artists,
manipulating the understanding of an art scene such as an exhibition opening.
This performance stood on in-depth engagement and communication
between the artists and the docents, as well as the art administrators and the audience.
It was to immerse into a reciprocal way of seeing,
and reflect upon the ‘social’ aspect of the art ecosystem we are part of,
as well as the communication with the audience,
who had certain expectations of engaging with the artists and their work.
As the title suggests, this is to highlight our positioning of being ‘beside’ each other;
becoming the ‘b-side’ of each other’s identity through the performance;
initiating a conceptual discourse on the social dynamics of art ecology
‘besides’ the showcase exhibition.
